The Down-Low On CBD Skin Care

4 minute read

We have all heard the hype about CBD in recent years; it's the trendy wellness product on the block—from gummies to health aids for our pets; CBD is everywhere!

CBD-infused beauty products have also been popping up and growing in popularity. Now, you may be wondering, "what's the difference between CBD and hemp?"

Wonder no longer! Let's do a deep dive into CBD and all things skin care. We'll break down what exactly CBD skin care is and some of the best-selling products.

What is CBD?

"CBD" is short for cannabidiol, a chemical compound from the Cannabis Sativa plant—which many also know as marijuana.

Cannabidiol is a naturally occurring substance used to create a calm and relaxing feeling for the user; it is commonly in oils and edibles. Whether it's a marketing ploy or micro-dosing CBD in our everyday product improves our health, we can find CBD lattes, CBD brownies, CBD gummies, CBD facials, and more.

One of the most common questions people have regarding CBD is whether it will get the user "high," as is common with marijuana usage. The answer is: no, it will not.

Unlike its close counterpart, delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), CBD does not produce psychoactive effects, while THC is the main active ingredient in marijuana. Thus, using creams, lotions, and other beauty products won't change your mental or physiological state.

You may have heard the terms cannabis, marijuana, and hemp used interchangeably when it comes to the topic of CBD. Marketers and beauty brands often push hemp oil, which is oil derived from the hemp plant's seeds but does not contain any CBD or THC.

Hemp oil is chock full of healthy fats and is used in many beauty products for its moisturizing properties.

CBD & Skin Care Benefits

Despite receiving a hard time from the Federal Drug Agency, many people have stated that traditional oral consumption of CBD products helped provide comfort for aches and pains, arthritis, and soothe anxiety.

So, how does it work for skin care products? What happens when we apply CBD topically?

Dr. Anthony Youn's video lists three features of topical CBD application:

  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Antioxidants
  • Soothing

For those struggling with severe acne, eczema, psoriasis, or rosacea, CBD moisturizers, lotions, or creams can help reduce inflammation, irritation and soothe general uncomfortableness.

Since legislation only allows for ≤0.3% THC, you may only see limited CBD-infused creams results compared to prescription medication. Moreover, CBD skin care may enhance your skin care just by a little bit—don't expect mindblowing results as the THC dosage is low or the product is actually derived from hemp.

If you're wary about trying CBD-influenced products, check out the American Academy of Dermatology Association's cautionary post about CBD skin care. Nonetheless, like any new product, apply a small amount of product as a test patch before you slather it all over.
